Floyd Bennett Field is an airfield in the Marine Park neighborhood of southeast Brooklyn in New York City, along the shore of Jamaica Bay. The airport originally hosted commercial and general aviation traffic before being used as a naval air station. This area now contains the surviving structures of early commercial aviation, and skid marks on the asphalt from car drifting.

KISS: FLY: AIR: BELT at Floyd Bennett Field points to the cinematic and architectural identity formation of Marine Park, to further propose that memory and citizenship are binding and mutually productive. This vehicle operates with the architectural vernacular of wrought iron heart window gates and clover cement breeze blocks to examine the relationship between structural instrumentality, spatial experience, and memory. The residual signs of the development of the Sheepshead Bay community into a residential neighborhood and waterfront real estate boom point to a semiotically encoded and symbolic experience of space.

KISS: FLY: AIR: BELT explores lighting techniques that can be used to disrupt, resist, and alter the visual signification and stillness attributed to appearing successfully oriented in hegemonic time and space. This installation’s use of overwhelming amounts of light escaping the inside the vehicle attributes a visual language for queer temporalities using light. This installation also considers diegetic and non-diegetic sound. A monologue of digital and industrial expressions is broadcasted from the car speakers. It is integrated into a live score utilizing the Nissan Rogue as an instrument to amplify, deform, and bury the peripheral sounds of airplanes flying into JFK International Airport and sirens on the Belt parkway.
